Oil Painting Ground

by Gamblin

Gamblin Ground makes a strong foundation for oil paintings. Formulated with alkyd resin, titanium dioxide and barium sulfate, Gamblin Ground makes fabric supports (canvas and linen) stiffer than acrylic gesso and more flexible than traditional oil primers.

Because of a higher percentage of pigments, painters need only apply two coats instead of the recommended four coats with acrylic gesso.

Dries quite glossy, though sanding fixes that no problem. My can had a 3/8 hide on the top that took quite a bit of paint with it when removed. Once that's removed, lay a piece of Saran wrap on top of the paint, pushing it down to completely cover it to isolate it from the empty space within the can, with the edges laying ove the rim of the can. Tap your lid back on an you shouldn't have any more trouble. Do this each time you use it.

I always prefer Oil Ground w/ linen and Gamblin is what I prefer. It lays well and dries true to application. A glossy finish is easily changed to a toothier finish and the paint lies beautifully on either.
