Sumi Ink Stick

by Yasutomo

More than 3,000 years ago, Asian artisans discovered how to turn the residue from burnt wood into one of the most important and lasting vehicles of human expression: ink. For more than a thousand years, the method of making Sumi sticks has remained the same. Soot from pine or certain vegetable oils mixed with animal or fish glue is molded and dried to form a well-shaped solid block which, when ground on a Suzuri stone with water, turns to ink.

Our 7th grade students studying Asian art had no problem using these ink sticks. They were amazed at the different shades and "depth" of their paintings.

Nice ink. Smooth, silky body when grinding, well dissolved, shades and tints very nicely.

The ink itself has a lovely, velvety quality that looks very good on almost any kind of paper. The sticks are easy to use and last for a long time.
