Masking Films

by Ulano

The Ulano Corporation gained worldwide recognition within the graphic arts industry with the invention and promotion of the first masking film: Rubylith®. Rubylith® is used in every segment of the graphic arts and has gained such prominence that the Rubylith® brand has become synonymous with masking film. Ulano continues to produce and distribute Rubylith® products to a broad graphic arts customer base, which includes the screen printing industry.

Rubylith® is a red masking film, which is suited for use with orthochromatic films. Rubylith® is safe for use with camera speed darkroom films as well as indirect gelatin stencil films and diazo, diazo acrylic, or SBQ sensitized stencil films or emulsions. Rubylith® is primarily used in the camera and plate making operations for offset lithography, flexography, gravure, and screen processes where orthochromatic films and plates are used.

Rubylith® RU3 is a high tack ruby film coated onto 300-gauge olyester. Can be cut manually or on a plotter to produce masks for film contacting and plate making and film positives for photographic stencil production. Rubylith has an emulsion thickness range of 1.1 - 1.2 mils.

This is a great product for working with any kind of photo-emulsion process, like screen printing. You can achieve very good detail working with exacto blades and Rubylith or Amberlith. Love it.

I have been using Ulano Rubylith for 30 years. Recently another company sent me Amberlith by mistake, and I was desperate, so I tried it. It did not provide enough contrast for my high resolution film. Doing a web search, I found Misterart had descriptions of both Amberlith and Rubylith indicating that the Amberlith would not have enough contrast for my application. When I received the Rubylith, I found it easy to cut with a diamond tip on my ploter, and easy to peel. My application requires lines and spaces as small as .015 inches, and the Rubylith did the job.

The film performed to may expectations, having used it before. For those interested in using it for making silk screens, You can use the Amber or Rubylith and adhere it to the silk with laquer thinner. Masking films are getting harder to find and Mr. Art had any kind you could want in several different size options.

I have used Rubyith for many years and lost my supply in a recent fire. I found what I wanted at MisterArt at a fair price and bought what I needed. The transaction and delivery was painless and I will use MisterArt again in the future with complete confidence.

When no one else had this product in large sheets, MisterArt.com came through.

The Ulano film is a high quality masking film. As an astrophotographer I use it for masking lights and laptop screens in order to preserve night vision. It is far superior to less expensive "red celephane" films and the heavier guage makes it very durable. For the laptop application; it lays flat and does not wrinkle distorting the display like celephane.
