this is more of a tip than a rating...but it will help make your Dexter work well. it needs a straightedge that grips the matboard as you cut. it will slip otherwise and ruin the mat. try a half-inch thick wooden board (about 2-4 inches wide from the lumber yard)) as a straightedge and glue the entire underside with medium sand paper. you're working with the back of the mat, so the sandpaper won't hurt the face of mat and it firmly grips the matboard as you cut. it's never failed for me! good luck!

I was first introduced to this cutter in my art class. I like the simplicity and weight of it. Once the blade is set at the correct depth, the cutter is easy to use. Great price, too!

I could not find blades locally for my old Dexter mat cutter. I found you on the internet. The blades are great and have a sharper cutting angle than my old ones. The price was right, also. Delivery prompt.

This mat cutter is just amazing how ever very sharp. You should definately practice cutting mat board scraps to learn how to control the mat cutter better. Also be really careful because the blade is so sharp I barely poked myself in the finger with the blade and it bled for over 30 minutes.

with a little practice this cutter can produce professional results and remains the most affordable portable mat cutter available. its main advantage is that it enables you to avoid the inconvenience or impractability of maintaining a permanent installation of a cutting system. most people don't have room enough for such a system and the Dexter allows you to make mats in limited space and storage areas.

This is a good product especially because it costs less. It does a decent job. With some practice I could cut my own mat and my second mat was definitely better than the first one I cut. It gets a bit tricky when you get to the corners but I think with some practice one can do a fine job. The cutter has a good grip and one of the advantages is that you can cut any size mat with it. The blade is quite sharp and if you adjust it well, you can have a clean cut in one go.

My only concerns about this product before purchase were completely alleviated after first use. I followed the advice of some helpful websites for first time mat cutting, and it went perfectly. My only regret was not using it also for the straight cuts for cutting the mat to size, because it cuts so much easier than a large exacto knife. I drew my lines with a good straight edge, and used a straight edge during cuts, and it went great the first time out.
