Because I didn't want to spend too much on a matting machine, this kit was perfect for me. There's a learning curve on how to use it, but once I figured it out, I was surprised how well my first matting project turned out. Hint-- use the non-scaled side of the ruler, the side with the silver channel, to attach the bevel cutter to when making bevel cuts- and cutting window openings will be surprisingly easy. Just do some practice cuts on the included mat boards. Also, it's best to be standing when cutting, so you can bear most of your weight down on the ruler to keep the mat board from slipping. And a self-healing cutting mat under your project would be helpful to protect your table surface (I have a 3' x 4' mat I use with my fabric rotary cutter, but it works great with the mat knives). And use new blades for every project or two, the replacement blades are cheap and readily available on Misterart.com (#270, I believe).

I bought this as a gift for my brother in Georgia. He is very pleased with it and says it has everything he needs and that it works fine. I wanted to buy a mat-cutter, but those were a little too pricey. For hand-matting, this apparently does the trick.
