These are my first pastel pencils. I used them for detail work on paintings done with soft pastels. I found that because they are so hard, it was hard to draw with them over pastels. Otherwise I love the colors.

I love these pastels. They are great for sketching out an initial pastel painting. They are also indispensible for detailed work. They WILL NOT sharpen with a pencil sharpener. I find that a really sharp exacto knife works great. You just have to make sure that you take off thin shavings at a very oblique angle.

I love these pastel pencils! They are very easy to handle and not a lot of dust. I would definitely purchase these again and from my favorite place Mister Art.

I like the Derwent pencils and would buy them again. They are softer than another set I have and have stronger color. My only negative criticizm is that the black pencil has been difficult for me to sharpen and breaks off before I can get the point I want.

These Are the BEST yet! 95% of my pastel portraits are done with these. Definitely hooked. The sharpening can be frustrating. Use a very sharp blade (I use the retractable kind with the breakaway tips) Avoid sharpeners---they cause more waste with the pencils. I wish that the common colors were more readily available. I had to buy a set of 12 just to get the ivory black! I paint pet portraits and use ALOT of black. Everyone is sold out of individual ivory black!!!! I need more...LOL

These are the best pastel pencils on the market. I have tried them all in my 25 years of pastel painting. For fine detailing they can't be equaled. They blend like a dream! For their performance, they are very reasonably priced. To reduce crumbling when sharpening, wet the tip for half a minute before sharpening, then let air dry completely before using. I have found the best sharpeners are a Cover Girl eye pencil sharpener (one big hole, one small hole) or a small Boston battery power sharpener. Insert the pencil VERY gently and don't sharpen for too long! Don't forget to wet the tip, but don't put it in the sharpener dripping wet, either!

They're wonderful to work with, but very hard to sharpen. I have yet to find a sharpener or a knife that I can use to reliably with them. Still, the results I was able to get with them makes the sharpening hassle worth it. Very good pencils!

These are just like soft pastels...only in a pencil! They are awesome for finer detailing and drawing...hard to do with a regular pastel...and not as messy! Blends really nice. I haven't tried to sharpen them yet to see how they hold up to that. I think I would still use regular pastels to cover larger areas but these can do the job too. Very nice, very neat, very easy to use and a big variety of color in the 72 pencil set. I'm very happy with my set.
