Neo Megilp Oil Painting Medium

by Gamblin

Neo Megilp Oil Painting Medium is a soft, silky gel. Neo Megilp gives body to paint, decreases viscosity, and can produce a luminous Turner-like atmosphere, suspending and supporting paint in a soft gel.

The medium does not contain lead, turpentine or mastic so it will not darken or become brittle.

Excellent for impasto and smoothness as well.

I picked up a small bottle of this at the art store where I work just to try it out, as I had heard many good things about Gamblin products. After using this during one painting session, I was hooked and I ended up eventually buying the 16 oz. bottle. It works beautifully. I mainly use it as a mixing medium, as I tend to mix different brands of paint and different paints have varying viscosities due to the different mediums and such that are used. so using the Neo Megilp as a medium when mixing is very helpful, as it makes the paint less tacky and easier to blend. The paint is suspended in this gel, making the application very nice and smooth; I suppose you could also use this as a glazing medium as well. Also, if you enjoy working in layers and you like impasto painting, this stuff is great for building up body in your paint. You do not need too much... if you add too much to your paint it can make it a bit gloopy. If the consistency of the medium is too thick, you can always add a small bit of Gamsol to the mixture and shake it up, but I don't ever find it necessary to do so.

This really works well for glazing, and it makes the paint stay wet for a good period of time. Do not confuse with Liquin, which speeds drying time.

I tried this product as I am painting quite transparently with oils on part of my paintings. This product gives a great workable sheen and more transparency. I don't use a lot of mediums, but I do like this gel and will buy it again.

Very glad I bought the large bottle - very nice.

When I find that I have painted an area too dark, I can repaint with a lighter color (even white) mixed with megilp. The darker color underneath still shows through. This has the effect of glazing without limiting me to only the traditional "transparent glaze colors".
