I am restoring an old oil painting that has a 1/2 in. crack horizontally across the entire surface. I painted over the crack using oil paint mixed with an alkyd medium. I also applied the medium several times, by itself, hoping to fill the crack, with no success. I now realize I should have sanded the area before applying anything. Now that the painting is finished, can you recommend what I can do to create a smoother surface? - Asked by Trish C on 13-Dec-12
Answer
Restoring a crack in an oil painting can be a very tricky and difficult process, and it is suggested that you leave it to a professional on that subject. However if you wish to fix it on your own, understand that repainting part of the painting may be required.
