Incredible Light & Texture in Watercolor -- DVD

by North Light

Watch as famous artist John Toogood layers wash after wash, gradually building rich texture and luminous light through two painting demonstrations: a gorgeous waterscape looking out on a crystal-clear bay, and a scene from the town of St. Georges in Bermuda, known for its narrow, provocative lanes and bright, sparkling sunlight.

Along the way, James shares favorite tricks--like adding a little lemon yellow to give a white sunlit wall a bit of sparkle, using the slightest touches of body color to intensify the impression of light, and how lively darks can be the true key to making your light really shine.

To further illustrate how these straightforward techniques can be used, James shares a selection of some of his favorite paintings and discusses how he charged them with texture and light.

Learn How To:

  • Portray a wealth of exciting natural and manmade textures
  • Use underpainting to infuse sunlit areas with a warm yellow glow and tone down shadow ares
  • Use masking to save lights
  • Use descriptive brushwork
  • Use drybrushing to impart lovely textures
  • Recover too-dark passages or soften over-pronounced textures
  • Paint the reflections and shadows of this crystal-clear bay
  • Capture the sparkling sunlight and rich textures of this provocative street scene

DVD is 60 minutes long.

I purchased this bec it was advertised (correctly as it turns out) at what is termed the "Intermediate" level. I recommend this out of 7 DVD/videos that I own or the 9 I have viewed from the library. Instruction hits the ground running, with a brief discussion of perspective in the VERTICAL format (refreshing). This is a superior approach: I was NOT inundated with yet ANOTHER blathering, uninformative rehash of tools, brushes ... Thank you Mr. Toogood. The video is not without references to some common sense, basic advice though and these are well integrated/reinforced within the instruction. I suspect the author has recognized that pandering to both novice and advanced painters is a silly strategy (how many videos on brush selection does one need in their personal lib?) Therefore, I applaud Toogood's approach in this instructional video and would purchase other products by him IF they were advertised at this intermediate and above level. Disadvantage: details on colors and proportions in which they are mixed are less than vague; in fact "Grandma's recipes" calling for a pinch and dash of this in that would be helpful in the future. This would have been in keeping to this tutorial's namesake. On the other hand, I am a scientist and, to be fair, what book/video takes an exact approach in this regard, eh? To summarize: Toogood is too good! I suggest the advanced beginner and intermediate painter purchase this without reservation. It is easily one of my top two favorite watercolor instructional videos.
