Acrylic Flow Release

by Golden

Acrylic Flow Release is a surfactant--a concentrated surface-active liquid which reduces surface tension, thus improving wetting and increasing the flow of acrylic waterborne paints. Surfactants are used to "wet out" pigments to ease their introduction into an acrylic resin, medium or gel. They can also be added to thinner paint mixtures, such as stains, to help reduce surface tension. Acrylic Flow Release is very useful for staining techniques, as it dramatically reduces the surface tension between the stain (paint/water) and the support. Certain supports, especially raw canvas, are inherently water repelling in nature and require the use of such a surface-active agent to allow the stain to wet and penetrate into the support. Golden Acrylic Flow Release also improves flow for brushing acrylic paints. This allows for improved leveling, and reduces bead up due to surface tension.

This is a great tool to keep acrylics from freezing up on you. I spray it on my palette and on the painting to blend colors readily. I am using it at approx. twice the minimum mix, 1:5.

Works great with Liquitex Basic Acrylics. Slows drying and increases spread. Peanut butter shifts smooth as silk to molasses and the chunks are gone. Haven't needed it for canvas penetration - Liquitex grips the canvas like grama's hugs. I bought the bigger bottle and a couple 2 oz. squeeze bottles. A grape size glob of paint and about three drops of Flow Release works pretty well. Give me enough Liquitex Basic and Flow Release and I'll paint the crack of dawn!

Great product but use with caution in spray form. It does exactly as advertised but needs plenty of ventilation for those with respiratory related helath problems!

It is temperamental and even slightly overmixing will film the paint. I ran identical tests on washes, inks, and even as a 1:1 “loosening agent”. Compared to other flow products, I found Golden’s to be lacking on its own. I do like it mixed with other brands.

This stuff is great!!! I use it in a spray bottle to thin and use almost as an ink. I've also noticed my acrylics stay wet longer, sometimes over night, they don't get lumpy or develope a film. Apply straight on wet paint with a brush and colors bleed like water color.

I really like this product. I use it for creating interesting effects in projects, as well as for thinning paints. Highly recommend the Golden brand. Their products are top quality.
