Casein (kay'seen) is a quick-drying, aqueous medium using a milk-based binding agent, and is a very durable media. Known for their versatility and array of capabilities, Casein paints can be used to create a variety of effects from the rich opaques of oil to thin watercolor washes. Apply Casein paints to almost any rigid, non-oily surface such as canvas panel, illustration board, heavy watercolor paper, plaster, metal, wood, masonite, canvas, or linen mounted on masonite. And they can be reworked or layered repeatedly and be used for under painting. Because Casein has an exceptional integrity of color and always dries to a matte finish, it is excellent for art reproduction. The velvety matte finish can also be buffed to a satin sheen or varnished to produce a resemblance to oils. Over time, Casein pigments become resistant to moisture and as history has proven, the medium has a durability and permanence which has easily stood the test of time.

i've been using shiva paints for several years and i love them. they have a really groovy velvety matte finish and are nice and non-toxic and clean up with water. my grandfather painted with them and so does my mother. i'm proud to be the third generation of my family to use these beautiful but underrated paints.

Shiva Casein Paints opened a new world of creativity for me. Thanks to this wonderful medium I was able to develop my "Day Dreamers" series, so popular with my collectors nowadays. I can create my pieces a lot quicker while the ideas and enthusiasm are still fresh in my mind. I look forward to complete the pieces to finally buff them to a shiny matte gloss.

Working with the Shiva Casein paints has been an enjoyable experience. The initial consistency (before drying) of the paints is buttery smooth. Using watercolor paper I have been able to mix colors on the paper as I do with oils on a canvas. Unusual effects of light can be derived by color glazes. I have NOT noticed an undesirable smell to the paints as mentioned in another review. I'm sure there is more that can be done with Casein that I have not yet discovered and that also makes it an interesting choice of paints.

Casein paints are wonderfully smooth. They dilute easily with water and adhere to even plastic surfaces. They have a strong odor, so be sure your studio is well ventilated.

Casein is an ancient and versatile paint. It has an amazing range. From watery to medium impasto. It dries very quickly to an impermeable very smooth finish which can be rubbed to a high gloss. Using the casein emulsion gives you more time to manipulate the paint. Although the paint has a glowing quality, it is easy to understand the popularity of acrylics which is more user friendly. As a tempera paint I find it curiously challenging. I actually prefer the Winsor Newton designer colors, but they are not as permanent as Caseins. Caseins are a specialized medium which will suit some to a T. I will continue to use them along with tempera and oils.
