Cold Wax Medium

Cold Wax can be used to make oil colors thicker and more matte. A soft paste formulated to knife consistency, Gamblin Cold Wax medium is made from naturally white unbleached beeswax, alkyd resin, and odorless mineral spirits.

Gamblin Cold Wax Medium contains no oil so it can be applied as a wax varnish over a dry oil painting. The medium comes in 4 oz. and 16 oz. cans.

I have been using this product for only a short time, but I do like it. When my oil painting is dry I put it on with a soft cloth, and rub in with another clean soft cloth. This seems to give more depth to the painting and protects it. If you prefer more sheen, buff longer. Some paints tend to be more or less shiny, and this wax seems to unify the paints as a whole in the painting. It is not too glossy, nor too matte, either.
