These clay-coated panels have a final coat of Higgins Waterproof India Ink. Using a scratch knife, hobby knife, or an abrasive like steel wool, artists can remove the ink and expose the white clay underneath. Claybord Black can be used to create exquisite line drawings and black and white illustration.

This clayboard is so much sturdier than the typical thin scratchboard. You can also apply a much wider range of techniques to produce differet affects. It's almost like working with a different medium. I have used it for several human and animal portraits.

The surface allows for very detailed and expressive images. I love to use this board for rendering portraits of the elderly. The Scratch Board Tools make it an ease to develop facial hair and create the multitude of wrinkles that give character to the image.

I've been doing scratch art for over 30 years and after reading a review of Ampersand Black Claybord, decided to give it a try. It is awesome! After using it, I'll never go back to the lightweight cardboard-style clayboard again. I used the same tool I have been using for years (xacto knife with #11 blade)and got excellent results. After completing the etching, I added some color with india ink and then finished with Ampersand Claybord Fixative. Couldn't be happier with the results!

You will find that clayboard allows you to have much more control when doing scratchboard pieces, as compared to scratchboard papers. You will not get the chipping of ink that you do with the less expensive scratchboard papers, and it will accept water as well.
