I did not begin using Marshall's Marlene until well after writing my first instructional book in 1994. However, over the past fifteen years or so, I swear by it--there's no substitute.

I've been hand-tinting black and white portraits for almost ten years, and have never used any other paint remover. Marshall's Marlene is reliable, doesn't harm my photos, and cleans up photo oils exactly where I want it to. It dries quickly and has a very low odor. It also lasts a long time and is very reasonably priced. I wouldn't trust my work to anything else.

Marlene is invaluable tool for removing Marshall's oils from B/W photographs. Gotta have it, it works great, although I must warn folks that it is pretty toxic, so make sure you have adequate ventilation. Great stuff! I wouldn't use anything else for hand-coloring photographs.
