Darwi Modeling Compound

by Kemper

Darwi is a white modeling compound that is nontoxic and completely hardens with very little shrinkage after air drying for about 24 to 48 hours. No firing required. Darwi sticks to most materials, including glass, plastic, and metal; it has numerous uses and applications. Use as modeling or sculpting medium, or in the repair of picture or mirror frames. Because Darwi is heat proof after hardening, it can also be used to make molds for casting metals.

Darwi is by far my favorite modeling compound. I use it to create and repair various parts of the statues I paint and repair. Although it is a challenge to keep it from drying out, I love that heat isn't required.

I teach a gourd art class so we are working with a wood-like item that is basically round. Darwi is fantastic for attaching other gourd pieces to the main gourd (handles, spouts, bases,etc.). After it has dried it creates a smooth, strong permanent bond to the piece. The dyes and paints used in the finishing blend so well onto the Darwi the end product is perfect. People always ask how we did it. I have tried other air drying products and none come near to matching the beautiful result that Darwi creates.

Darwi was recommended to me by an expert for repairing antique dolls. I have used it in simple repairs so fair, such as filling in missing pieces or modeling missing fingers. It does require quite a bit of added water as you work, unless you are fast, because it begins to dry more quickly than you expect when first using it. Easy to use and decorate, just excellent for my sideline of restoring bisque and composition dolls!

I use Darwi to sculpt doll heads, hands, and feet. I find it to be an excellent product. Since you do not need a kiln, I can use it at home in my studio. It is the only clay I use.

I have used DARWI for a number of years now and have never been disappointed. As far as I'm concerned, it's the ONLY product I would use for my particular craft. It's the best!

I enjoy the Darwin compound for several reasons. I make gourd sculptures by cutting and gluing gourd pieces together. I then fill in with the air dry clay so I have a seamless finish. I can also sculpt intricate facial features onto the gourd and if I need the bottom of the gourd to be evened out I can use the clay for that as well. I can use a wet sanding sponge to smooth out cracks after it has dried. See my work with this clay at www.justgourds.com/whimsicalworks.htm

I own an old composition doll that belonged to my grandmother as a child. It needed repair, as the composition material was chipping and some of the fingers and toes were gone. After finding out what professionals charge to restore these dolls, I decided to try it myself and had read that Darwi was the best product to use. I had absolutely EXCELLENT results with Darwi - after sanding, painting and other finish work the repairs are seamless, no cracking, etc. I might have to get into the doll repair business! Thanks for your prompt service too!

A wonderful clay for small sculptures. Dries hard enough to sand and holds paint very well. I saw no noticeable shrinkage and there was no cracking during the drying process. I really enjoy using it.
