As a former calligraphy teacher, I would recommend the Speedball Elegant Writer to all beginning students interested in learning calligraphy for the following reasons. First, they are inexpensive. Second, the medium point works well with "yellow pads" or any other writing pad of the same size. Third, they make a straight, clean line. And fourth, you can do some real quality work with them. I have used them for years and for basic projects, I could not recommend anything else.

These are not good markers. Their edges are dull, the ink is mediocre. Zig markers are the best markers, Y&G are pretty good too.

These markers are the best! They're great for anybody just learning calligraphy. I'd get the fine point to start off with. It's a bit smaller then the medium and is easier to write on the notebook lines. If you like them then I'd get the medium too because they're a lot of fun too. Impress your friends with them! Mine were impressed and love them too. They'd make a perfect gift too if you get a book on calligraphy to go with them. :)

I thought the pens were great. I had to write out 35 bridal invitations and I only used the one pen. I love this set.

These sets are fun. I wish that the extra pen color, purple was included rather than two black pens. The tip is strong, but I'll have to say, I have not used them long enough to see how fast the precision of a tip deteriorates. We need more daring and dramatic ink choices, for example, check on the fantastic inks Sakura uses in their Gelly Roll pen series. Mr. Art sent me the Elegant Writer Calligraphy kit by mistake (but let me keep it--very kind). I have to alert you that this kit is substandard. It does not give instructions and would definitely turn the novice off of learning the fine art of Calligraphy. X-height is not explained, and the paper given in the set does not correspond mathematically with the x-height required for the pen sizes included in the kit. Bad! With some better planning, one could create a dynamic kit that gets a novice started on this fantastic and ancient art.

I used Elegant writers for all my commercial calligraphy work for over two decades. Then they stopped making the Burgundy, which was the color most called for, which looked wonderful on golden wheat parchment. That pretty much took the wind out of my sails AND my sales. Next, they stopped making the vivid Orange and Purple and several other colors. Now you can only get Black, Red, Green and BROWN??? Who in the heck wants brown? I always maintained a set of Broad, Medium, Fine and Scroll points in each color. The Burgundy, I usually kept two full sets, just in case I'd break one. Nowadays I just get the mediums and cut them into Scroll point and fine points. I'd love to be able to get the full range of colors like in the old days. My students were always quick to buy the burgundy pens also. I'd have a class of fifteen students every six months who would all buy, on my suggestion, Elegant writers. Now I don't know what to tell them.
