The Coate family has specialized in the cultivation of willow in Southwest England since 1819, and for more than 30 years they have been producing the world's finest artists willow charcoal. The very best willow rods are selected from each crop to be used in the production of this charcoal. The willow is not compressed and is sorted and burned in its natural diameter and shape, slight variations are characteristic. This creates a charcoal with a velvety smooth stroke and rich, deep black hue consistent throughout the different sizes. Particularly favored by artists who want the widest range of tonal value to produce the most captivating works. Unsurpassed in imparting artistic vision in sketch form, from gesture sketching to blocking out a painting.

Customer Product Reviews

I provide my students with a variety of charcoal products, and invariably they like the Coates Willow Charcoal...
Rated by: Timothy C. in Philomont, VA
The thin soft sticks are great for figurative and portrait work. We use them in my classes and they provide a rich, dark black. They sharpen well to provide a nice point for subtle drawing and shading. Haven't come across the knots I have found in some brands. Good deal.
Rated by: MIRIAM F. in Lakewood, NJ
Very reasonable price for a box of 25! The sticks were easy to use, and the thinness of them made it easy for my students to draw thin lines, and so control the delicacy of their artwork. However, the same thinness made the sticks very fragile and easy to break. So, they are not so well suited for beginners.
