Can one use retouch varnish on wet oil paint to secure it so a color can be painted over without bleeding?

Answer

Damar Retouch Varnish Spray may be used on wet oils for protection and then worked on after the application has dried. It may provide a temporary, thin barrier between layers, but colors underneath the retouch varnish may be affected as painting continues.

Does this retouch need to be removed before painting over?

Answer

This varnish is to be applied in very thin layers. Once it is completely dry, you may paint over it. This is not intended as a final varnish.

I want to spray retouch varnish on my dry painting in progress. Should I wait more than 30 minutes for it to dry today before painting over it?

Answer

When the surface of the painting is dry to the touch, one very light coat of retouch may be applied to it for protection against excessive dust. Allow 5 minutes between coats, if heavier applications are desired.

Can I use retouch varnish to go back on a dry paint to add another color then retouch varnish again?

Answer

Retouch varnish is suggested for use while the paint is still wet. This product will not work if the paint is fully dry. But yes, you can go back on a wet painting to paint again.

For the past forty years I have used a medium made of 50% damar varnish and 50 % Pure turpentine. This is quite close to Grumbacher's retouch varnish. After three days my paintings are dry to the touch. I spray with three coats and never have to spray or hand paint with any other coating. The retouch varnish becomes part of the skin coat and protects the painting. I have seen paintingss that I treated as above thirty years ago, and they look like I had just treated them!!!

this spray varnish is particularly useful when applied to a painting which is not quite dry enough for the varnish to be applied by brush.this type of varnish comes in the non-spray type, which must be brushed onto the painting.if the painting is at all wet the brushing will melt the paint and brushing may ruin the painting. the spray variety of this varnish will enable you to apply the varnish without a brush and avoid the possible harm that might otherwise be done.

Grumbacher's Retouch varnish spray is an invaluable tool. It allows me to frame and hang oils without waiting for the paint to completely cure and to paint over mistakes or redo an area without redoing the entire painting.

Grumbacher Retouch is So hard to find in other paint stores. It is the best for using so that you can brighten, and define your project, and going over somehthing that isn't quite right... doesn't make you have to do the whole painting over. It is GOLD to have in your painting supplies
