Product Questions and Answers

Which metals does this work on?

- Asked by Gail on 26-Oct-13

Liver of sulphur is for use on copper surfaces only.

- Answered by MisterArt on 28-Oct-13

Can I use this product to darken my copper sink to a light antique finish? If so, should I use a wax, lacquer, or both to protect my desired color?

- Asked by Richard on 19-Oct-13

Check out this website as it gives some methods on how to do this:

How much does a 4-oz bottle cover? We are using it for a copper mailbox that's about 10 in. x 12 in.

- Asked by k kenn on 17-Aug-13

One 4-oz. bottle should easily do a 10 in. x 12 in. area.

- Answered by MisterArt on 26-Aug-13

I have a mottled copper table top with a waxed finish. The copper has been reclaimed with lots of black and variegation through it on a particular spot on the table. Can I use this product to dull this spot down? And put my wax polish over it?

- Asked by Bob F. on 13-Apr-13

The Liver Of Sulphur is an oxidizing agent and only works if poured directly on a copper surface. If the surface has a wax finish, you would need to prime the surface first before using this product.

- Answered by MisterArt on 16-Apr-13

What do you sell to age aluminum and pewter? I'm mostly embossing with these metals and I've been using a black permanent marker.

- Asked by Sharon on 16-Jan-13

We would suggest using the Sophisticated Finishes Antiquing Solutions by Triangle Coatings. This solution will give your aluminum and pewter an aged look.

Excellent for copper, sterling silver, and .950 fine silver. Use warm water (1 tspn/1/2 cup H2O), and clean cotton pad to wipe off excess water after rinsing. Several applications, and a built-up patina are preferable to single deep immersion. Minimal use of this product, and quick resealing of the container prolong shelf-life. Very satisfactory product, used worldwide. is the leading source for this product in the U.S.

This product not only did what it was advertised to do, it was priced very reasonable and was received in less than a weeks time. I was pleased beyond words!!!

This stuff is amazing. Works wonderfully, and produces a pretty durable patina on copper. You only need one teaspoon mixed with water to make a cup of solution, and that would cover at least 10 sq. ft. The only downside is the short shelf life--in three weeks, my bottle already has crystallized 1/4 inch on the top! But it's cheap stuff, so I don't really care.

Terrific product! Easy to use and the results were exactly what I was looking for! Our table is spectacular!

I bought Liver of Sulphur because I wanted to age some steel that I had for a costume, but it doesn't have any effect on it. I knew I was taking a gamble because it's mostly used for pewter and brass for jewelry, so I'm mostly writing this review just in case anyone else has similar ideas. I still haven't found a good way to age steel. The product was delivered pretty quickly and I didn't have any problems, so I'll probably use again if I need hard-to-find art supplies.

It was my first time oxidizing sterling silver so I decided to get this due to great reviews. I was very pleased with the results! It was very easy to use and the smell wasn't really that bad- I did it outside. However, the bottle says to use cold water, but that took a LONG time. I read online to use HOT water and that sped up the process. Pieces of silver turned black within seconds with hot water. I recommend this for oxidizing silver!

Great transaction, product exactly as described. Worked great!

This product worked perfectly. The art project I made for a school auction turned out beautifully and brought in thousands of dollars for the school. Just be sure to saturate the copper. Wiping on a little bit only leaves streaks in the copper.

i've used this product for over five years now and much prefer it to the solid chunk travels well for workshop instruction, is wonderful for demonstrations, is easy to store, easy to add to buckets of water for dilution. your website also provides easy access for students to order - another big plus! i've been quite happy with your product since the beginning, and recommend it in my classes as a source every single time. thank you!

This was my first order from, and I was quite pleased. The ordering process was simple and straightforward, and the item I ordered - a small bottle of Liver of Sulphur - arrived only two or three days later. The Live of Sulphur solution, produced by St. Louis Crafts, did a wonderful job of antiquing several pieces of copper and silver jewelry. I will gladly purchase this brand from again!
