Color: A Course in Mastering the Art of Mixing Colors

by Putnam

Millions of people have learned to draw using the methods of Dr. Betty Edwards' bestseller The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. Now, much as artists progress from drawing to painting, Edwards moves from black-and-white into color. This much-awaited new guide distills the enormous existing knowledge about color theory into a practical method of working with color to produce harmonious combinations.

Using techniques tested and honed in her five-day intensive color workshops, Edwards provides a basic understanding of how to see color, how to use it, and-for those involved in art, painting, or design-how to mix and combine hues. Including more than 125 color images and exercises that move from simple to challenging, this volume explains how to see what is really there rather than what you "know" in your mind about colored objects, how to manipulate hue, value, and intensity of color and transform colors into their opposites, balance color in still-life, lndscape, figure, and portrait painting, and much more. Paperback book measures 7 1/2 in. x 9 in., 224 pages. Penguin, 2004. ISBN 1585422193

Dr Betty Edwards is one of the geniuses of our time, as you know from her book "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain." Here she has hit another homerun. Basically this satisfied my need to know that I can't get all the color I want because of limitations (I will say flaws) in the manufacture of paints. I am attempting to integrate standard color theory with the primary model of yellow, cyan, magenta. Until I have succeeded, the best is this book and your knowledge that buying colors is far superior to trying to mix from primaries if clear color matters to you. I contend there are seven primary colors! Look for my book on color in 2007!
