Griffin Alkyd Oil Colours

by Winsor & Newton

Developed in response to overwhelming request, Griffin Alkyd Fast Drying Oil Colors dry faster than traditional oils but not as fast as acrylics. All Griffin Alkyd colors remain workable on the palette for 4-8 hours, are touch dry on the canvas in 18-24 hours and dry to a uniform satin finish.

The quick speed of drying for these genuine oils allows techniques such as impasto and glazing to be achieved in considerably less time. And greater transparency than traditional oils gives increased depth and clarity to glazes while consistent drying times make overpainting easier, regardless of the color on the canvas.

I love these alkyd oil paints. Very creamy consistency. Allows me to paint every day, all day. Almost never have to wait for drying. Only one drawback-- can't save extra paint for the next day. But they are so reasonably priced. A great value!

My buy was excellent, the products were shipped very soon. All very well.

Winsor & Newton Griffin Alkyds Oil Colors are my favorite when painting plein air. Especially when I'm traveling some distances because of the drying factor. Also the fact that you can intermix them with "regular" oils if I happen to run out of a color in alkyds I may have it in oils.

When painting "Plein Air" I most often use a little white "Alkyd" in my oil white to speed up drying...works great. Also for studio work the Alkyds are wonderful.

By their nature alkyds seem to be stiff and not buttery, their main advantage being that since they dry overnight you can do more work quickly than with traditional oils, but are spared the problems of the water miscible ones. My hat is off to Winsor & Newton for groundbreaking entry into these and for faithfully making all the hues, not to mention working with the Awful Lid Syndrome.

I am completely satisfied with these alkyd paints! While wet, they provide the same feel of traditional oil paints, and are usually dry enough the next day so I can continue my work. I use glazing as a painting technique, and these paints are perfect for my needs.

I like to used alkyd colours because of the durability, brightness, quality, and specially because of the rapid drying time , that gives me the opportunity to have special effects in my paintings.
Rated by: Joan C. in forest hills, NY
I really like the product but the only thing you should be aware of is that the paints are not as dense as normal paints--otherwise they are a great product and I will continue to use when I need fast drying.
Rated by: Shirl C. in Hackensack, MN
I love the WN alkyd paints. Their colors are vivid and because I do a lot of detailed painting, I appreciate the quick drying time.

I have been using W&N products for ten years. Their oil colors are always great, but recently I've tried an Italian brand called Maimeri. The consistency of the Maimeri paint is truly fabulous - a step above the W&N products and at a better price...even better than the deep discounts offered on the W&N paints I've found on this site. If you are a serious painter like myself, I'd try the Maimeri paint before buying another W&N equivalent. Once you try it you'll never go back. Trust me, you won't regret it.

WINSOR & NEWTON Griffin Alkyd Oil Colours have been a favorite of mine for many years. I paint in layers with brush and wide palette knives and can add new levels of color each day. The more transparent colors work well over the more opaque ones and this allows me to create dynamic and complex paintings.
Rated by: Bob L. in Minneapolis, MN
You can use your oils the next day by placing a dixi cup over the oil, works great.
