Winsor & Newton makes great charcoal. Their willow thick charcoal is very good but I have a personal preference towards their vine. The vine just seems to have a smoother glide than the willow.

Winsor & Newton vine charcoal medium is amazing. It is extremely smooth compared to other brands that have hard small chunks that sometime scratch your paper. I wish I purchased the box of 12 because I used so much of it already!!

Sharpen well without breaking and erase clean.

I tried several brands of charcoal before discovering the finest charcoal available...Winsor & Newton. Winsor & Newton charcoal meets all of my artistic needs from line drawing to tonal studies. I adore working in charcoal and Winsor & Newton is the only charcoal that consistently performs to my expectations.
