These pencils have a high quality graphite strip which can be used dry as a traditional sketching pencil or wet when water is applied with a paint brush. They come in varying degrees that allow the artist to create extra tonal dimension--light wash (HB), medium wash (4B), and dark wash (8B).

Water-soluble Sketching Pencils are an excellent medium for line and wash drawings.

Using Derwent pencils for the book I am illustrating has made my job easier! I get wonderful tones and textures with the pencils, using a brush and water to create washes. I highly recommend them!

I have been using these pencils now for quite some time and find that I never tire of using them. Whether as an under drawing for a painting or as a stand-alone medium I am amazed at the versatility of these pencils. The gradation of the hue can be dramatic or very delicate making the Derwent water soluble pencil invaluable to this artist.

Good, dark rich black when used with water. Fairly easy to control. Nice feel to the pencil. Smooth application.

These pencils were new to me when I recently ordered and tried them out. Boy was I pleasantly suprised! I love the slightly larger size of the wood and now I never leave home without them for sketching! Even if I don't use water! I choose the 4B med wash and really love it's graphic potential.

I have been using Derwent's water soluble pencils for over 12 years and I find them invaluable in developing drawings for watercolor, egg tempera and acrylic paintings as well as stnad alone graphic drawings.

These are fun and have a great hue.
