Product Questions and Answers

Will this work on shiny brass bathroom fixtures?

- Asked by Empress on 03-May-14

The fixtures may need to be lightly sanded prior to application in order to help the Rub 'n Buff adhere appropriately. Keep in mind the longevity of this wax finish may be reduced as it is handled over time and exposed to the humidity of running water.

Can you use this to cover up a brass shower frame? Is it waterproof?

Can I use Rub'n Buff to highlight shallow routing designs and varying font sizes routed into finished mahogany wood?

Is it durable enough to be used outdoors? Is it weatherproof?

- Asked by Nikki on 05-Jun-13

It helps to protect surfaces, but it is not weatherproof. We do not carry anything to seal it for this purpose, as we sell it mostly for art applications such as on frames and indoor furniture. It is an enamel-based wax, so any sealer that works with this should work.

Will this product work on chrome to dull the shine of chrome?

- Asked by Joan Ferguson on 04-Apr-13

The Rub'n buff wax can essentially be used on any clean dry surface. However, it will not give a chandelier a dull look, for example. The more you buff the wax into the surface, the more shine and luster it will add to the surface.

I have several inexpensive angel statues made of resin or something pourable. Is Rub'n Buff suitable for achieving the finish I want?

I used this on a piece of metal jewelry. Do I need to apply a sealer over it to keep it from eventually wearing off?

- Asked by Rose on 01-Mar-13

Is there any way to remove a spot from fine fabric?

- Asked by JoAnn Sanborn-Ann on 28-Feb-13

We do not carry a cleaner for the Rub'n Buff paints. Because they are wax-based, you would need an alcohol-based cleaner to remove them. Depending on the type of fabric, alcohol-based cleaners can damage the fabric.

I'm trying to create a "satin nickel" finish on a brass metal shower door surround. Any suggestions?

The closest color in the Rub'n Buff line to satin nickel would be the silver leaf (item #19046).

- Answered by MisterArt on 26-Feb-13

Can it be removed from a frame if you do not like the results?

- Asked by jacie on 11-Feb-13

Rub'n Buff becomes permanent once it has been buffed into the surface. It is waxed-based, so you could use the Adhesive Remover by 3M or the wax remover by Yaley.

- Answered by MisterArt on 11-Feb-13

I want to guild the edges of black outdoor mounted light fixtures, will this product tarnish?

- Asked by Susan on 21-Jan-13

Rub'n Buff can be used on the base of the light fixture. It is wax-based and will not tarnish. It isn't weatherproof, however.

- Answered by MisterArt on 24-Jan-13

I've used Rub'n Buff (silver and gold colors) on my etched glasses and it works great, but I've found that the other colors don't cover as well. I would like to do wedding flutes with color name engraving. Any suggestions?

I have used this product on my glass etchings. It gives them a nice look. It's great on wedding goblets. This really brings out the design.

After reading that this product wouldn't work on cheap magnetic brass hinges, I tried buying new ones in bronze. After a couple of failures with buying the correct size/type of hinge, I decided to try the rub n buff. For those who asked about using this over cheap hinges that are actually brass color over steel or aluminum (do magnet test), rub n buff does work. I just did it. Soak hinges in mineral spirits or thinner. Spray clean hinges with zinseer123, I used white which I had on hand. Let dry. (I sprayed both sides and let dry over night). Once dry, I applied rub n buff with a rag. Because I used white zinseer123 primer I had to used a toothbrush to apply the rub n buff in the crevices that showed still showed white. I used ebony and autumn gold to create bronze. They look amazing.

I am very pleased with this product. I have been using it for many years. I use it mostly on fine art projects. I have recently been using it on polymer clay sculptures. It works beautufully. I especially like the antique gold. It has a very warm old fashioned quality. It gives my art a truly antique look. I had trouble finding the antique gold in retail stores. I was so pleased to be able to buy it on Thank you so much for the prompt delivery. I will definitely be buying more products from you in the future.

First off, let me acknowledge the staff at this company! I had a problem with shipment(1st time ever),called company and got a replacement overnight! GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! Refreshing to find a company like this. Tried this product for the first time and what a product! Reviewers were not kidding when they said it was easy and a little goes a long way. This product blends beautifully, extended work time so you don't feel rushed like paint. No lines from overlapping work areas. You can achieve a matte type look or a high shine with minimal buffing which only takes moments. Covers extremely well over painted surfaces which I was concerned about as it states for "porous surfaces", and nothing shows through. The metallic "silver" looks great, not cheap looking like I have found with many metallic paints/leaf. Whoever created this product was a genius! Goodbye to expensive quarts of paint on so many things, I am in awe!

I have been told about this product from another professional, so I thought I would give it a try. I located the product at the store they requested but only had limited colors. So, I got online anf found MisterArt and also located the rub 'n buff and i was amzed on how many diferent colors were available. So I ordered at least eight diferent colors and was very pleased with all of them.. I would definitely recommend MisterArt because of their abundance of colors and shipment was fast and inexpensive.

Great product but need more colors. Easy to apply and quick shipping. It works great on our engraved plaques but need some techniques on how to remove it from large surfaces once dry.

Not just for furniture. This product provides excellent coverage for other crafts & art as well. Use on clay sculpts & jewelry for an antique finish or inexpensive gold, silver, etc look. Consider "painting" it onto a branch to use as the top of the wall hanging of your next masterpiece. Use ventilation as the smell can get a little overwhelming. Outdoor furniture that has gotten worn looking can look brand new with this product! Change the look of household items like lamps. I bought all the colors and have found so many uses! After trying some of the other colors I have found that they are just as useful. And I like that I can make "old" looking items I have appear new & trendy.

I recently moved into a fairly new home. The hanging light fixtures in the dinning room and entry way were very nice, but I just couldn't stand the color and was not wanting to go through the expense of buying new ones. My new neighbor told me about a product called Rubb N Buff, so I got online and did a search. I was happy to find the product at Mister Art. The product was delivered to me within 3 or 4 days...I was so surprised at how quickly they filled my order. The product is unbelievable. My lights look gorgeous and no one would ever know I applied the finish myself...they look sooooo good. Thank you Mister Art!!! diane

I have used this product for a long, long time, and I love the finish. When buffed it looks like real metal instead of the dull painted look you get from sparay paints. You can get some amazing antique effects by mixing a coup of colors. If you want your work to look professional, I would definitely recommend this product. I do wish they would come out with a bronze!

This stuff is fabulous. I have used it on frames, a mailbox, a light fixture, a fireplace screen and a ceiling medalion. I found that I could get a great oil rubbed bronze look combining spanish copper and ebony. Adding mineral spirits and painting on gives more work time and a more even coat on larger surfaces. I love it.

I am thrilled with this product. I purchased a black wrought iron shelf/towel bar combo and used the Antique Gold on it. Totally transformed the shelf into something beautiful. Also used Spanish Copper and Antique Gold on a rather plain looking brown wrought iron chandelier and again I was very pleased with the outcome. Made the piece look way more expensive than the purchase price.

I ordered this product to highlight some leatherworking projects. One such project was a mask for a costume outing, and people could not believe how good it turned out. It takes a little practice to use the stuff effectively, so have some scrap pieces on hand before your first use.

This product exceeded expectations. I needed to change some gold frames and was faced with an expensive project as I had six prints, one of which was quite large. I received an estimate of $475.00 for the job. I ordered the Rub'N Buff Pewter and applied to the frames. In addition to being fun, the frames looked even prettier than the new frames that I would have ordered with just minutes of applying and buffing. The results are lovely and I'm truly delighted.

Rub n Buff is an awesome product. It's easy to apply, cleans-up fast, and most importantly, give a beautiful finish to whatever it is applied to. It's just so versatile. It is difficult to find Rub n Buff in stores . . . especially a wide color selection. And, I wish they'd make the product in a bronze color. Can't live without Rub n Buff!
